چکیده

Many terms have been used to describe gingival overgrowth. The expression gingival hyperplasia (“abnormal increase in the number of normal cells in a normal arrangement in an organ or tissue, which increase in volume”) and gingival hypertrophy (“enlargement or overgrowth of an organ or part due to an increase in size of its constituent cells”) have been also used, although gingival overgrowth is the general term that better describes this iatrogenic condition. Drug-induced gingival overgrowth occurs as a side effect of some systemic medications. The pharmacological agents mainly associated with gingival overgrowth are:

Treating patients with drug-induced gingival overgrowth.

The purpose of this paper is to review the causes and describe the appearance of drug-induced gingival overgrowth, so that dental hygienists are better prepared to manage such patients. Gingival overgrowth is caused by three categories of drugs: anticonvulsants, immunosuppressants, and calcium channel blockers. Some authors suggest that the prevalence of gingival overgrowth induced by chronic m...

On the Cellular and Molecular Mechanisms of Drug-Induced Gingival Overgrowth

INTRODUCTION Gingival overgrowth has been linked to multiple factors such as adverse drug effects, inflammation, neoplastic processes, and hereditary gingival fibromatosis. Drug-induced gingival overgrowth is a well-established adverse event. In early stages, this gingival enlargement is usually located in the area of the interdental papilla. Histologically, there is an increase in the differen...

Using Salivary Nitrite and Nitrate Levels as a Biomarker for Drug-Induced Gingival Overgrowth

AIM Drug-induced gingival overgrowth has a multifactorial nature and the pathogenesis is still uncertain. It has been suggested that Nitric Oxide (NO) might play a role in the pathogenesis of drug-induced gingival overgrowth due to the contribution of NO to immune response and matrix degradation. NO levels in biological fluids have been used as a diagnostic biomarker in many diseases. The aim o...

Gingival Overgrowth Induced by Immunosuppressive Treatment with Cyclosporine a and Mycophenolate Mofetil in a Patient with Kidney Transplant – a Case Report and Literature Review

Cyclosporine A, a drug that inhibits the immune response, has been widely used for over 30 years in immu‐ nosuppressive therapy protocols for patient‐recipients of the transplanted organs. One of the commonly reported side effects of Cyclosporine A is gingival overgrowth, with varying degrees of severity, which may interfere with the aesthetics and normal functions of the oral cavity. Combi‐ na...

Amlodipine- induced gingival overgrowth: a case report.

Drug-induced gingival overgrowth occurs in genetically susceptibIe individuals as a side effect of various drugs. There is a gross disfiguring enlargement of gingiva mostly in the anterior region leading to difficulty in mastication, speech and maintenance of oral hygiene. In this case report, amlodipine-induced gingival enlargement and its management are discussed. Drug substituion, appropriat...
